The survey, sponsored by Absolute Software, an IT asset tracking specialist, found that 44% are not able to keep track of both their PCs and Macs on the same network.
The research, undertaken by Vanson Bourne and taking in responses from 100 IT professionals in major UK organisations, also found that 75% of larger enterprises surveyed do not know where all their laptops are at any one time and only half of SMEs do.
Commenting on the figures, Dave Everitt, Absolute's general manager of EMEA, said that it shows that a high number of IT managers are in need of better IT asset management to enable them to keep track of their mobile equipment and keep the data on them safe.
"Having the ability to manage both PCs and Macs is also a pain point for IT administrators", he observed.
According to Everitt, the consumerisation of the mobile enterprise means that employees are becoming increasingly reliant on using personal mobile devices both from home and in the workplace.
"However, it is imperative that IT managers know exactly how staff are working and where their organisations mobile devices are to avoid a creeping laptop lethargy where it is just assumed that everything is okay", he said.
"Unless they stay in control, they run the risk of opening up their companies to big security threats and potential fines, which is a particular concern in the current economic climate", he added.
