Canadian iPhone heist caught on video

According to the Toronto Sun newspaper, the iPhones were stolen by a trio of thieves on May 26, with two men keeping the shop assistants talking whilst their accomplice, a woman, slipped into the back room.

"The store was closing down and that's why the store members were a bit more distracted," Gareth Bawden, online marketing manager for Teleco, told the paper.

A total of 17 iPhones were reported stolen during the heist, but staff only picked up on the theft after they carried out a stock check following the store closing for the day.

According to Bawden, after examining the CCTV footage, he realise that the woman had quickly stuffed the iPhones into a bag she was carrying and moved back quickly to the public area.

"The first reaction to the video was shock, because again, that's the last person you would expect to steal from you," a spokesperson for Teleco told the paper.

"Obviously it was a good learning tool for all of us", he added.

The online documentary was made, says the store manager, to warn staff and other electronics retailers, about the incident.

Infosecurity notes that, somewhat belatedly, the store has improved security in its store to stop the theft happening again, as well as adding a fingerprint biometrics system to secure the store room.
