Locke told the audience gathered at the Ronald Regan International Trade Center that the Commerce Department’s Internet Policy Task Force would initiate a review to help identify cybersecurity challenges in the commercial sector.
The Commerce Secretary said the Task Force is seeking public comments on how to improve in this area and, furthermore, how to do so without curbing innovation in the technology sector.
“The importance of cybersecurity can be summed up in one word: confidence. That’s what underpins everything we do on the Internet”, Locke said during the event’s opening remarks. “We are now developing a policy framework for innovation and working to strengthen the connective tissue of the Internet.”
He informed the audience that, in an effort to promote trust in internet commerce, his department would publish a Notice of Inquiry (NOI) on “Cybersecurity, Innovation, and Internet Policy", which appears in today’s Federal Register.
The NOI aims to solicit comments from commercial, academic, and public sector stakeholders in both the cybersecurity and online commerce spheres. Analysis of the comments will be used, according to the Department of Commerce, in an upcoming administration report highlighting domestic and international policies that promote both cybersecurity and internet commerce.
The NOI provides details on how and where to submit comments, which will be taken for the next 45 days.
