Judge Richard Roberts also ordered Gregory Fair, 46, of Falls Church, Virginia, to pay software firm Adobe Systems $743 000 in restitution, according to the Washington Post.
Fair pleaded guilty in April to charges of criminal copyright infringement and mail fraud for selling pirated copies of Adobe software between 2001 and 2007.
Undercover US postal inspectors made several purchases of pirated software from Fair after Adobe reported his activities.
In July, the software supplier shut its US offices for a week to save money on operations. Last year, Adobe cut 600 jobs, or about eight percent of its workforce.
When police raided Fair's home in March 2008, they found a CD burner and label printer that Fair used to produce a high volume of counterfeit software, prosecutors said.
