According to Microsoft, the new MMPC in Munich will monitor for threats – including active attacks and proactive detection of malware – in the region to help protect the company’s worldwide user base.
The Munich lab joins similar facilities in Redmond (Wash.), Washington, Dublin, Melbourne, and Vancouver, in addition to other researchers in New York, Los Angeles, and Beijing.
The latest blog post from the MMPC said that Munich was chosen for its central location in Europe, which would also allow it “to be more agile in responding to threats across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa”.
A release that accompanied the announcement stated that the MMPC network helps monitor for malware threats that affect 600 million computers running Windows in 270 countries worldwide. The labs operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, Microsoft said.
