The bulk of spam does not normally reach users mailboxes, Infosecurity notes, as most ISPs filter out spam at the tier one Internet level, only allowing through emails they cannot positively identify as spam.
Additionally, during July, the company reported that web-borne threats have finally crossed the threshold making them the predominant method that cybercriminals are using for their illegal activities.
Delving into the report reveals that spam volumes increased by another 27% on a month over month basis - as compared to June and have increased 400% since February of this year.
According to MX Logic, there was an increased prevalence of spammers using Google's trending topic information as a method of determining new social engineering tactics.
This is significant, the company says, because of abuses of Google's PageRank system and scammers artificially inflating trending topics on Web 2.0 sites like Twitter.
