Security and mobile IT offer better job prospects

The Higher Education Statistics Agency recently reported computer science students suffered the highest graduate unemployment rate with 17% unable to find a job six months after graduating. A survey by recruitment website CWJobs.co.uk found 87% of 1300 IT professionals believe security or mobile IT jobs offer the greatest opportunities for computer science graduates.

Graduates should also consider unpaid work experience and joining industry bodies rather than using social networking or blogging to improve employment prospects, said CWJobs.

Richard Nott, website director of CWJobs said: "While we have seen opportunities in banking and finance improve rapidly, other sectors such as telecoms and software are now following suit."

"It is however undeniably still a tough market, and so it is essential that graduates emerge from university fully equipped with all the knowledge and guidance possible", added Nott.

Linux, Cisco and Oracle were also rated as key graduate skills while 52% of 1300 IT professionals believe web development, and related skills in Java and SQL, were growing areas of job opportunity.
