Skype fixes flaw in Skype for Android application

Last week, Asher admitted that Skype for Android was vulnerable to data theft if the user installed an infected third-party app to the Android smartphone.

Asher said in an April 15 blog that it "has been brought to our attention that, were you to install a malicious third-party application onto your Android device, then it could access the locally stored Skype for Android files."

The vulnerability could allow hackers to collect private information from the Android smartphones, including the user's name and email address, contacts and chat logs.

To provide a permanent fix to the problem, Skype provided a new version of the application.

“We have had no reported examples of any third party malicious application misusing information from the Skype directory on Android devices and will continue to monitor closely. Please rest assured that we do take your privacy and security very seriously and we sincerely apologize for any concern this issue may have caused”, Asher said in an April 20 blog.

Asher instructed users to update their version “as soon as possible.” He stressed that users should download the update “only from skype.com or from the Android Market links on skype.com.”
