Symantec launches graduate recruitment programme

With a target to hire more than 350 graduates in all aspects of the business worldwide - from the research and development division through to marketing - Symantec EMEA says it will employ 39 graduates and 13 interns across 9 countries during 2010.

Specific to the UK, where 25 of the graduates and all 13 interns will be recruited, Symantec will visit UK universities, including Reading, Southampton and Surrey, during the new academic year.

The IT security vendor says it will also exhibit at the National Graduate Recruitment Exhibition in London later this week.

Online activity includes the creation of a Facebook portal to act as the hub of the campaign and connect directly with students.

Announcing the EMEA programme, Michaela Burr, Symantec's director of talent acquisition, said that, despite the challenging times, the company is dedicated to investing in its people and attracting the brightest talent.

"We have grown enormously as an organisation in the last ten years and it is important that our organisational culture matures at the same pace."

"The future looks positive for Symantec and we're excited about finding some of our future leaders amongst today's graduates."

The graduate recruitment programme is not the first time that Symantec has tapped into university-qualified people for its staff, as the company has established fellowship links with a number of universities across the world.

In 2007, Symantec launched its Research Labs Graduate Fellowship, under which promising graduate students who demonstrate an interest information security, storage and systems management are give one-year fellowship sponsorships.

Earlier this year, for example, the programme - now in its third year - selected three US students, Kevin Butler, Polo Chau, and Marco Cova, to receive full one-year fellowships covering 100 per cent of tuition and fees, along with a competitive stipend to fund ongoing research in their respective areas of expertise.

Under the scheme, graduate trainees are paired up with mentoring staff within Symantec Research Labs, each of whom provides ongoing technical guidance on the recipient's research during their graduate training.

As part of the scheme, the trainees are invited to work as summer interns at Symantec's headquarters.
