Based at Fort Meade, Maryland, the 780th Military Intelligence (MI) Brigade “conducts expeditionary and remote cyber attack, cyber exploitation, and cyber defense operations of Army and Defense information networks”, according to the brigade's website.
The brigade's 781st MI battalion and headquarters, at Fort Meade, and the 782nd MI battalion, located at Fort Gordon, Georgia, will conduct signals intelligence, computer network operations, and offensive operations, in support of the Department of Defense, Army, and interagency operations worldwide, explained Col. Jonathan E. Sweet who will command the brigade.
The brigade will be part of the Army’s Intelligence and Security Command headed by Maj. Gen. Mary Legere. She said the new brigade has been “hand-picked, specifically recruited and purpose built.”
The newest Army brigade will provide support to Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Gen. Raymond Odierno, chief of staff of the Army, as well as Gen. Keith Alexander, commander of the US Cyber Command and head of the National Security Agency, in the area of cyber defense and cyber operations.
