Director of UKRI’s Digital Security by Design and Professor of computer architectures at the University of Manchester.
Prof. John Goodacre holds a Professorship in Computer Architectures in the School of Computer Science at the University of Manchester and is co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer at Kaleao Limited. His career has encompassed various positions of influence across multiple technology focused disciplines in both software and hardware.
His early work in computer telephony resulted in the first scalable platform capable of low-cost automated phone control that developed the markets for audiotext, pre-pay calling and workstation-controlled call centers. In moving to Microsoft, he led the development and introduction of the first real-time collaboration tools which shipped in Microsoft Exchange enabling the enterprise with the industry’s first video and desktop sharing experience.
More recently, he was responsible for the design and introduction various key processor technologies, including the ARM MPCore multicore which enabled the modern smartphone as well as capabilities such as Trustzone security, big.LITTLE, virtualization, and aspects of the new Arm 64 bit architecture. His roles today extend across both academic and industrial research around web-scale servers, exascale efficient systems and secure and trustworthy ubiquitous computing, while also driving forwards the technological vision for the Kaleao systems roadmap for hyperconverged, high density, low power servers. This gives him a unique hardware and software background with experience from embedded to the largest of big data and HPC systems.
